An offering bowl, is usually sprinkled with a little rice or perhaps salt.
It is to honor their ancestors. It is a reminder to walk with their ancestors TODAY not with them in the PAST. It is to share the happiness of their life NOW; not to live in the past turmoil that their ancestors may have gone through.
